Bourdieu en la periferia
Capital simbólico y campo cultural en América Latina
The impact of Pierre Bourdieu's provocative work on contemporary criticism is both noticeable and subtle. Its epistemological model, its methodology, its vocabulary and even the limitations and excesses contained in the theoretical paradigms of reflective sociology left a deep mark on Latin American thought, as a counterweight, complement or correction of Marxist ideas and the influential socio-cultural tradition. This book analyzes the dialogue that is established between Latin American cultural criticism and the ideas of the French sociologist, particularly his concepts of cultural capital, literary capital and symbolic violence, proposing a critical path back and forth, moving from the influence of the French sociologist's proposals on peripheral reflection as well as the challenges it poses to European philosophical, sociological and anthropological thought. Bourdieu's relationship with cultural criticism in contexts such as Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, the Andean cultural area, and his contributions to the study of literature, culture, gender, politics and communications are particularly explored. The implicit dialogues between the work of Pierre Bourdieu and that of Beatriz Sarlo, Ángel Rama, Renato Ortiz, Néstor García Canclini, Jesús Martín Barbero, Antonio Cornejo Polar and Nelly Richard, among others, are particularly studied. Thus, it opens the way for a productive articulation between the thought of Pierre Bourdieu and postmodernity, the postcolonial question and the problems generated by globalization and neoliberalism.
